What are cookies?
Cookies are small data files that are sent from a website’s server to the browser. The browser stores this information on your hard drive and sends it back to the server on your next visit. Cookies, for example, ensure that you do not have to log in again each time you visit a previously visited website. Cookies can also be used to better adapt the content of a website or the advertising the surfer sees to his/her preferences.
Cookies contain a unique code that the browser recognises during the visit to the website (‘session’ cookie) or during subsequent visits (‘permanent’ cookie). Cookies can be placed by the website’s server or by partners with whom the website works. A website’s server can only read the cookies it has placed itself; it has no access to other information stored on your computer or mobile device.
Cookies are stored in a separate folder of your browser. The content of the cookie usually consists of the name of the server that placed the cookie, an expiry date and a unique number code.
